Tuesday is RUBBER DAY: Final product ‘vibration damper’

Did you know that on DESMA injection molding machines 968.560, 968.700 or 968.1000, among other things, so-called switch sills, track shoes or railway pads are produced?

These are used for noise protection and vibration damping of the tracks of trains and suburban trains, but similar parts were also installed in the Gotthard base tunnel, the so-called rubber sleeper shoes. At 57 km, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is the longest rail tunnel in the world. It crosses the central Swiss Alps in a north-south direction and thus passes under the Gotthard massif, among other places. Since 2016, up to 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains have been running through here every day.

Elastomer articles of this kind are inconspicuous and many of us are not even aware of their ‘existence’, but the vibrations caused without them would be far too great, so that rails or roads would not be able to withstand the permanent loads. In cities, such rubber articles, among other things, can be used to contain the noise pollution caused by subways and commuter trains.
